Elion?
Our IP boutique pays homage to Ms. Gertrude B. Elion (1918-1999) by being named Elion.
Ms. Gertrude B. Elion was a truly remarkable woman, biochemist, pharmacologist and inventor. She, together with Mr. George H. Hitchings and Sir James Black, invented the rational drug design, which is the process of developing drugs getting to know the target of the drugs rather than using trial-and-error methods; their work was acknowledged with the Nobel Prize in 1988 in Physiology or Medicine.
The R&D work by Ms. Elion led to the development of the anti-retroviral drug azidothymidine for the treatment of diseases such as leukemia, malaria, lupus, hepatitis, arthritis, gout, organ transplant rejection, and also to the development of the antiviral drug acyclovir for the treatment of herpes infections.
